Northern Ireland based geekery & nerdisms

On Monday again. Drat, and after I was doing so well.

After many years of avoiding Lisburn Omniplex like the plague (I did work there for a little while, and for some reason, I rarely go back to places where I have previously worked. I don’t know why, I just find it odd), I have recently been haunting the place once again. Renting or downloading movies is all well and good, but there’s nothing quite as nice as a date night in the cinema. I like to plan it so there are no children there while I am and sneak in my own popcorn. It’s the little things.

Anyway, I have seen a variety of movies in the last month or so, of varying degrees of goodness. That was terrible grammar. Hansel And Gretel 3D? No no no, very, very bad. A Good Day To Die Hard? Entertaining, but a little devoid of believable emotion/character.

Wreck It Ralph? Bloody fantastic. And adorable. With sprinkles.

First of all, I will have you under no illusions – this is a children’s movie. It’s not like Monsters Inc. or Toy Story, where there are a ton of ┬ájokes thrown in for the adults…this is all for kids. That does not, in any way, detract from it’s sheer brilliance.

It’s about video games, so what’s not to like? Lots of retro favourites make appearances; Pac-man, Sonic, Bowser, Dr. Robotnik (or Egg-man, depending on your generation), the list goes on. Very pleasing. Metal Gear Solid gets a teeny tiny reference too, so obviously they are expecting this to be a film that fathers will end up taking their children to.

I’m not being sexist, I’m just psychic about marketing techniques.

The movie itself is colourful, funny and well-written, and the cast is huge and famous. Which is good, if, like me, you are a fan of the ‘Who’s voice is that and what else were they in?’ game. I am a particular fan of the (obviously) Gears Of War inspired marine chick, the poor, long suffering members of the villains support group, and the Sugar Rush racers, who are just too adorable. Girly moment. Sorry.

Look at their little faces!

The tiniest bit of research (Wikipedia, obvs) has informed me that Ralph was nominated for a whole bunch of awards, and won a whole bunch of other ones. Oh, look at that, they’re already in talks about a sequel.

Brilliant. Bring it on.

I did warn y’all I would be blogging my heart out for a couple of days. We are effectively snowed in, see. I thought it would be a fun novelty, but I am already crawling the walls, and craving all the foods that aren’t in my house.

So! I know I’ve already done my January Etsy finds, but that was before the snow started, and I do so like to be topical. I tried to hunt for local crafts, but I could only find a couple without making the links too tenuous and iffy, but I’ve made it very clear what is from Northern Ireland, and what is from elsewhere.

Also, I made a snow Batman.

Also, I made a snow Batman.

Anyway, first up, I am (yet again) promoting the very lovely jewellery of a very lovely friend. She didn’t even have to bribe me or anything, this time.

As per usual, click on the picture to be chucked over to Etsy, for prices and details and pictures and things.

From HearHoofBeatsThinkZebras, I give you this deluxe charm bracelet, all themed around Disney classic, Snow White. See? Snow themed! I particularly like the tiny snow flake and the little cameo charm with Snow White in all her animated glory. One of the store’s pricier pieces, it’s still a bargain, and the antique/vintage style is really pretty. You may see a few pieces like this floating around Etsy (and elsewhere), but I can promise you – best value, best quality, best seller.

Okay, I’m a little biased. So sue me.

This little guy is also local to Northern Ireland, and look at his little beak! And the cheeks and the feet, awk. I love anything unique and wonderful, and this kawaii penguin charm is both those things. And penguins live in snow, so my theme is still going nicely.

While these extremely geeky earrings are NOT local, I can definitely vouch for the seller, having ordered (in reasonable bulk) button badges from her before. Emma Frost (frost! Frost is like snow!) is one of my favourite X-Men, if you ignore the slightly sexist and annoying portrayal of her in First Class, just check out that pout.

Again, NOT local, but it gets a really big picture so you can see, it detail, just how awesome this is. It may be the best lighter that has ever existed. And Winter Is (not only) Coming, it’s here.

Theme complete. 20G for sticking to theme.

Yes, you read that correctly. Before I get into it, there is something you must know. I love The Disney Store. It is my guilty pleasure. I can’t walk past it without being sucked in and dancing around the damn place like a Disney princess.

And, on a recent excursion, I saw goodies. Many, many goodies. It wouldn’t be like me if I didn’t take pictures of them all to share with you now, would I?

Look! Look at all the awesome!

So, for those of you who did not know, Disney bought Marvel a few years ago. This is a good thing, in my opinion, because look at how adorable you can make your babies! For those of you that have them, anyway. Those of you that don’t can just…try squishing your adult sized selves into these baby sized clothes.

Just a side note: do you know how difficult it is to get pictures in the Disney Store? People assume you’re trying to take pictures of their chubby little children. No, ma’am, I am not planning to abduct your sprog.

Moving swiftly on, I can see me doing a great deal of Christmas shopping here. Yes, okay, Disney are notorious for over-pricing, but they have some really cool things in at the moment. I’m not even being all girly when I say this. Behold. Boy presents.

You wouldn’t like me when I’m…drinking tea?

Anyway, I’ll keep it short, but I sincerely hope you’ll go have a look. Even just so I won’t be the only one over 18 in the place without a leach. I mean…child.

p.s. They also have Frankenweenie stock in now! I can’t wait to see this movie.
